Did you ever play that card game called BS, Reader?
Everyone got a hand of cards and took turns laying them down in order. If you didn’t have the right card, you had to bluff… and hope no one called you out.
I was TERRIBLE at it. I'm a horrible liar.
My face is as readable as the morning paper. 🥴 😂
Anyway, people are as savvy as ever, and their BS detector is only getting stronger when it comes to AI.
Readers can tell when something’s stiff, generic, or churned out by a bot. And they don’t just scroll past it - they actively tune it out.
So, how do you stand out when the BS detector is on high alert?
Here’s what I’ve noticed from my clients’ campaigns lately:
1️⃣ Hyper-specificity wins. Don’t just run another “fall challenge.” Combine it with something quirky or personal so it feels yours.
2️⃣ Human interaction matters. Want replies? Incentivize them. “The first 25 people to reply get [bonus/offer]” works way better than “Hit reply with your thoughts.”
3️⃣ Your real life is your edge. A random Starbucks order mix-up, a funny kid moment, a hobby you’re obsessed with - tying those into your business makes you memorable and human. AI can't replicate that.
The bottom line?
Robots can’t compete with the messy, specific, delightfully human stories only YOU can tell.
So next time you sit down to write, ask yourself:
👉 Does this sound like me, or does it sound like everyone else?
Because the more you you sound, the more your readers’ BS detectors will relax… and the more likely they are to stick around.
